BEESTON 10-0 FAREHAM
Beeston were in action in Round Four of the England Hockey Cup on Sunday when they hosted Fareham. Four goals from Martin Jones, a Chris Seddon hat-trick, a brace from Sam Ward and an Andrew Monte penalty corner flick powered the Bees into the quarter final draw. This was a quality win against a well organised National league side. Carl Smith was faultless at centre half, the defence solid and impenetrable but Fareham at times looked like a boxer pinned to the ropes as Martin Jones hypnotised them, twisting and turning at pace. This was a display of forward play at its best.
Beeston had Ali Wilson and Adam Dixon away with England playing in the Champions Trophy in Australia. George Pinner and Ben Arnold were at England indoor training, David Griffiths was driving a Ferrari in Northamptonshire and Jamie Parker was missing with a hamstring injury. Zak Jones and Tim Whiteman were also missing and these unavailabilities gave Beeston the chance to give a debut to Philipp Studt from Austria and move up another 3 youngsters from their development squad. Wayne Rowland came back from injury and Tom Skinner kept another clean sheet in the Beeston goal.
Club Chairman, Martin Keeling commented, "There have been great moments over the past two decades. Australian Craig Keegan's impact on the National League in the 90's, Pakistan international, Mohammed Nadeem's ability to precision pass over 50 metres and eliminate players at will, David Griffiths' winning goal in the 2008 Cup Final and our recent success in Europe, but Martin Jones's performance today was sheer quality and at times awesome."
Beeston's second string, Beeston Swarm drew 4-4 with Birmingham University Lions to head the Midlands Challenge League 7 points ahead of Cannock Stags.
Beeston travel to Cannock next Sunday for the final Premiership match before the indoor break. The Midlands Derby match starts at 2.30pm at Cannock HC.
